When I started this blog back in '08, I did it for two reasons. One was because I could show my web design skills to the world and because I could download any music I wanted even if it wasn't released yet. And when I heard Ye and Hov's Watch The Throne had a release date I was watching for the leak... until last night.
Many of you may not know who John Meneilly is but he's one of the most important men in the music business. He's Jay-Z's manager. He's the man next to the man. The bulletproof vest. The buffer. So, when he tweeted "It is not going to leak...", my hopes of bumping Watch The Throne in the Panamera this weekend sunk like the value of the American dollar.
You see, this epic release is like no other in recent music history. It's being released on Itunes exclusively for the first 4 days and then to the rest of the world. And since the inititial release is not physical (cd or vinyl) the chance of it leaking is slim to none. I have a lot of faith in the hackers and bootleggers so I'm going to wait and see if this strategy works. If it does work then The Throne will be responsible for changing the way music is released in the future. And I will have to find another way to get my music before you do.
I'm sure the execs at Apple are hoping and praying that this works because the value of there digital music platform is going to skyrocket. Early leaks have been part of the blame for slumping album sales since Napster blew the lid off the music industry hustle over ten years ago. And when Itunes first launched tech dumb music execs weren't really happy about idea at all. They couldn't forecast the future. In their minds it was just another form of Napster. Since then billions of dollars have been funneled to the record labels through Itunes. But they still bitched about not making enough money.
If this "Throne Strategy" works Steve Jobs will be the toast of the music industry. He'll go down in history as the messiah who saved the people from demise. Or atleast until the hackers and bootleggers figure out a way to infiltrate the Itunes safes.
